IRP: International Registration Plan
The International Registration Plan (IRP) is a mutual agreement between the 48 contiguous U.S. states and Canada. It authorizes the registration of commercial motor vehicles to operate among the jurisdictions (states). This means if a truck operates in several jurisdictions, the owner must annually report the mileage driven in each state and the registration fees will be based on the mileage driven in each state.
Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT), also known as Road Tax, is an annual federal tax imposed on certain heavy motor vehicles, including trucks, truck tractors, and buses using our public highways. It only applies to vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.
